For those interested, some SOUL members are going to see Romeo and Juliet this Saturday at 2 pm. Anyone else interested is welcome to join us. Either send an email to soulevents@unc.edu or show up at the CDA around 1.40 pm and meet us there!
We need fliers for the Oscar Wilde party. Would you mind designing something? We would like it to be elegant, in the style of a formal invitation. Here's the info:
- Oscar Wilde Dinner Party (I'm not sure if it should be dinner party or birthday party)
-October 14, 2007 at 6.30 Greenlaw Donovan Lounge
-Dinner will be served
-they must RSVP by this upcoming wednesday october 10
-rsvp to sarah.a.bull@gmail.com
If these could be up as soon as possible, that would be lovely. They must RSVP by Wednesday...
Hey, come out for the Harry Potter Book Discussion on Thursday! woo hoo! I was wondering if anyone would be willing to co-lead with me. I'll come up with questions, but just to facilitate. I'd love the help!
T.S. Eliot's birthday. What a delightful excuse to insert bits of Eliot quotes into every day conversation: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/T._S._Eliot
Next Event: Harry Potter 7 Book Discussion at Caribou*
Thursday, October 4, 2007 7.30
*We're still waiting to hear back fro Caribou to see if that's alright*
For the Oscar Wilde Party, here is an option for a caterer. www.chefdd.com
It looks pretty reasonable, so go ahead and begin picking out what sort of food you'd like to have at this party!
Hey! I'm so glad to hear that our first event went so well! That's so encouraging. I've even heard that people are clamoring for an event between now and Oscar Wilde. What if we had a Harry Potter #7 book discussion? I was thinking maybe we could call Caribou and ask them to lend us their fire place room. What do you think?
For Tuesday:
Sarah is MC. She'll open.
Poem of September 11 (by Amy)
Readers:
Denise
Devon
Chris Chiltern
Soo Jin Kim* (I've moved you to Tuesday. Do let me know if this is a problem.)
For Wednesday:
Natalie is MC. I'll open.
Cellar Door presentation
Lauren Bailey
Joel Kearney
Sarah Morayati
Maria Devlin
Stephen Leeson *possibly*
And if you still want to read, just bring something to one of the events OR respond and add your name to the end of the list. The MC for each night will get up in between each speaker and just say "Now we'll have ___________ speak." That way we can have little breaks to get snacks and stuff.
Those of you who can, do come early. I'll need people there by 7 to set up the coffee, food, chairs, and music. Hooray!!
Ok so we need some people to be a part of the meeting next week! Here's what we need:
1. Master of Ceremonies (one for each night, if we're still doing that) (Professor Anderson??)
2. 5 people each night to share a portion of a work they enjoy. I don't think presentations should be longer than 5-7 minutes. Maybe read a little and explain why you like it.
3. Someone in charge of refreshments each night. That means getting there early to set them up and staying late to clean them up and put them away.
4. Someone in charge of extra seating each night.
I guess just respond to this post and tell me your full name and which night you'd like to carry out your duties. If you're dying to help, then put your name down for Wednesday, since Tuesday is still up in the air.
And advertising team, do you have all the information you need to publicize this event?
October 16, 1854. Let's have a wee party.
-advertise authors from North Carolina or who stayed here while writing i.e. Thomas Wolfe, Walker Percy, tour Betty Smith’s house on Rosemary Street
-Movie nights are to be works about novels, authors, or stories worth discussing on film. The following are just some suggestions:
-Dead Poet’s Society,Wonder Boys,The Hours,The Lives of Others
-The many stories of works
-Birthday parties for major authors, particularly Shakespeare, Thomas Wolf, and Walker Percy,-this might include readings and get the professors to put on skits
-Mixers with faculty and students!!! let's have several of these events
-Bring in speakers
-Peer poetry reading sessions
-all writers (esp those in the creative writing department) are welcome to read their own work and receive comments back from peers (no faculty). We might want this even to be a work shop session
-Attend poetry slam
-Short story club: because we’re all too busy to read full books, we might have a group decide on a short story they’d like to read and discuss
-Story time for kids! Give kids in the community a chance to come and have UNC students read their favorite children’s stories (either ones they enjoyed growing up or wrote themselves)
-Game night
-Take a professor out to lunch for a one on one session
-get professors to come and give a short talk on their favorite work
-Go see plays in the community. This fall Goethe’s Arcadia is coming to Carolina as is Romeo and Juliet
-Movie theatre outings together and discussion afterwards. Such as Atonement. Any others?
-Luncheons: faculty make food and bring it in and socialize with students
-Curriculum forum: professors and students discuss the requirements for the major
Any other ideas or refinements of these ideas?
