Spring 09 Classes

Hey everyone,

This discussion board is here for you, your amusement, your GPA, and possibly your happiness and well-being.

You know that you've registered for a class before, without knowing more about it than what time it's held. But it doesn't have to be that way. We have a large member base, and are always growing, so let's use that to our advantage.

Between all of us here, I'm sure that we've already experienced most of the teachers in the English department, and countless others outside of it.

So why not share the wisdom that we've gained? Who was your favorite teacher? What was your favorite class? How was the reading load? How many papers did you need to write? How was the grading? Was it mostly discussion or lecture?

Also, if you're registered, or are considering registering for a class you know nothing about, why not ask?

great teachers

Shakespeare - Professor Gless is AMAZING!! His class is mostly discussion and he's brilliant. There are 2 papers and 2 tests. I got the first paper back and he is a somewhat hard grader, but he will give you some points back if you re-write. Even if you don't get an A, his class is well worth taking. Reading load isn't too bad - just a lot of plays but each play takes several classes to cover.

Chaucer or English 120 - I know Chaucer sounds scary, but Professor Leinbaugh is the coolest guy and makes you totally love middle English by the end. You will feel SO smart coming out of his class and he's a pretty lenient grader. He will be happy to meet you for coffee outside of class and share his amazing life experiences. Class is pretty much all discussion.

Romantic lit classes - Beverly Taylor teaches several of these. I really liked her because she was so passionate about the material and knew a lot. She is a very sweet lady and though class is mostly lecture, it is interesting. Wasn't too hard to make an A - 2 papers and 2 tests.

African American classes - so, not an English class, but if you need an Afam class, try and take Professor Porter before he moves to Europe (within the next 3 semesters). He is incredibly liberal, but very knowledgeable and will teach you things about American history you never knew before. Usually doesn't use text books b/c he says they are "all lies" and class is discussion. He doesn't want to treat you like typical college students who need to be lectured at non-stop - if you are working in groups one day and want to do your work outside, that's fine with him. You read mostly short biographies by African Americans. The reading can be a bit heavy at times, but is always interesting. 2 tests (test your knowledge but not ridiculously hard) and a 15 page journal over the course of the semester.

Bland Simpson (creative writing) - take him if you can!! He is not only a good teacher, supremely interesting, and very kind, but he will be a real friend if you let him. For the nature writing class I have with him, he hosts trips to University Lake, Mason Farm, and Battle Park. He also takes time to meet with each student individually and just talk about writing, life, the University's history etc. I literally talked with him for an hour and a half sitting on the steps of Wilson one day. He's a cheerful grandfatherly-type figure and really cares about his students. Usually has class outside. More outside reading than in come writing classes, but pretty interesting.

Ruth Moose (creative writing) - she's super nice and you will definitely make an A. Her classes are just fun and everyone knows each other by the end. She's a very cheerful personality.

Naumoff (creative writing) - He is probably the best creative writing teacher at this school because he really makes you improve as a writer. If you are serious about writing, take him! He can come off as a bit harsh, but he is really a wonderful person, very bright, and makes lots of comments on your pieces. He also likes to have class outside which is nice. I probably miss his class more than any other I've taken at UNC.

Marianne Ginger (creative writing) - She is also a lovely creative writing teacher. I took her for memoir writing (which is soo much cooler than it sounds) and while she does do many comments on your pieces, she is never harsh and a fairly lenient grader. Not to mention that she is eccentric and sweet as can be...you'll love her from the moment you meet her.

Oh, and of course Dan Anderson - he is awesome (but I mean, who didn't know that - he is the reason SOUL exists). His was my favorite class freshman year. Way fun!

English classes ?!

Shakespeare - I second Lauren's opinion on Dr. Gless. Not only is he a brilliant man who will open your eyes to startling, surprising, pleasing aspects of the plays that you've never noted before, but he is extremely kind, extremely good-natured, and makes the class a pleasure to take. You'll like him so much, you will want to work hard for him. It's the best class I've taken at UNC so far.

English 120 - I took it with Joseph Wittig, who was quite a good teacher--hampered only, I think, by our class's low level of enthusiasm. We covered a lot of ground and I got a very good basic understanding of many important authors.

English 121 - An excellent course, but alas, my wonderful teacher Professor Avery has retired!

Naumoff (creative writing) - like Dr. Gless, you will also want to work hard for Professor Naumoff. He's harder on the class, and when he's not happy with your work, he'll let you know straight-up, but that's extremely valuable in a creative writing teacher, because when he tells you your work is good (and he's generous with his praise for good work) you know you can trust him. His good opinion is worth earning. He picks good stories for the class to read and I think he leads workshops well.

Durban (creative writing) - like Professor Naumoff, she can be intimidating, but she's a brilliant woman, always ready with a quote from Chekov to help you see her point, she puts a great deal of effort into helping you revise your stories and get the best out of them, and you know that when Professor Durban tells you you've made progress, you've made progress. I certainly recommend taking a class with her.
