Usually with a subject like "What can ...... do for you?" you know it's just a way of getting you to read about all the services that the group is already offering.
But not this time. We really want to know what we can do to help you. Is there something you'd like to know more about but aren't sure where to get the information? Maybe something like information on writing competitions, book or movie recommendations, information on plays or concerts around UNC, or a way to have a writing workshop?
All you have to do is let us know, and we can find a way to make it happen.
What SOUL can do for Me...
I'm a poor grad student, and I'd appreciate it if SOUL could wire me not less than (the modest sum of) $5,ooo by the end of the week. For this gift, my cold apartment and my hungry rabbits ( http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l164/slateloose/rabbit.jpg , http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l164/slateloose/Photo194.jpg ) would be forever thankful. To show our thanks, we'll rename ourselves in your honor. I'll go henceforth as SOUL, the rabbits will be Harvey and Anderson. Or Greenlaw and Carolina. You pick.
Miss you guys. ;) Keep the SOUL alive.

First, Harvey is an
First, Harvey is an excellent rabbit name that you should consider regardless of other circumstances (classic movie reference, anyone?) But, yeah, those are adorable rabbits!
Also, $5000 is more than a years tuition. We would perhaps be willing to send you a sweatshirt and a head of lettuce.
book club
I still think we need a book club. Because that would be great. I could even do it myself, be a one-woman book club or something. I don't know how discussion would work out, in that case, though...
I think some informal
I think some informal lunches (somewhere on Franklin Street) would help foster a feeling of community. There wouldn't even need to be a specific agenda, really.

definitely! We could
definitely! We could probably start those after fall break - it doesn't have to be formal - thoughts?
informal meetings
Dan and I have been talking about doing something like SOUL coffee on wednesday or monday mornings. Super informal, if people come they come if they don't they don't, but it could get to be like a little ritual in the same vein of what you're talking about.
how would people feel about that?
Also, for the book club idea (which we tried and failed at last year), We're working on a pretty good idea in CLOUD, which would mostly be like a book swap. everyone could bring a copy of their favorite book (probably second hand, or a cheap copy off amazon, like $2) and trade. We think we'd try to meet every month to do it, and then you can talk over your favorite book with the person that you traded with, and get your book back, and swap again. of course, it doesn't have to be a direct trade (maybe you want their book, but they don't want yours). It wouldn't be hard to get SOUL involved in this if people are interested.
meetings?
The coffee hour idea sounds pretty good.
Also, I was wondering if there were meetings going on that I missed? Just curious - there's a bunch of stuff going up here.
