Ok so we need some people to be a part of the meeting next week! Here's what we need:
1. Master of Ceremonies (one for each night, if we're still doing that) (Professor Anderson??)
2. 5 people each night to share a portion of a work they enjoy. I don't think presentations should be longer than 5-7 minutes. Maybe read a little and explain why you like it.
3. Someone in charge of refreshments each night. That means getting there early to set them up and staying late to clean them up and put them away.
4. Someone in charge of extra seating each night.
I guess just respond to this post and tell me your full name and which night you'd like to carry out your duties. If you're dying to help, then put your name down for Wednesday, since Tuesday is still up in the air.
And advertising team, do you have all the information you need to publicize this event?
Comments
ideas, etc
Hopefully we can handle more of this concretely at the meeting this Thursday, though I'm glad you're thinking about all of this. I've got two readers lined up (Maria and her friend, Denise) and I'll read something, if and only if we can't get enough participation from other people. I'm *hoping* some SOUL members who aren't committee members or chairs will be inspired to share a personal story (excerpt) or poem... or someone else's work they enjoy... because it'd be so nice to hear from our extended SOUL family ...
Food. I'm going to bake some cookies, or something. Anyone else want to make something? We shouldn't go overboard I'm sure, but baked goods = people. I mean, people will come and eat our food and have fun. (I'm certainly going to hang around before and after... I will clean up, and be glad for any help.)
Seating ppl is a Good idea. I can't see myself having the stamina to set up a bunch of chairs. Let me know what you think... I personally don't want a set up that's like... a classroom. Something semi informal and circular seems a good idea. But we can talk about this more at the coming meeting.
Publicity. Where are publicity people? I'd like some emails going out to SOUL... members... something official to make them aware early of this coming event. I plan to bring ART SUPPLIES (a few) to the meeting this Thursday, so those who are artistically inclined can doodle posters for the event while some of us plan. Drawing/planning meeting. I'd like to stick posters around Greenlaw. I'd like to get a key to those locked cases for AEM (aka SOUL) and put posters in them. I'd like SOUL members doing interpretive promotional dance on the quad.
Seriously: I want this whole event to ride a fine line between ordered and organic. I want people to sense that it was 'planned,' but not that it was utterly w/out room for a change of course. I want people to laugh, have a good time, arrive early or hang out after to chat w/fellow English majors. I also want readers to be able to get feedback, meaning I will be bringing labeled notecards (also meaning I need to know whose reading beforehand, though we can discuss the chance of guests reading w/out advance notice).
I'd be glad to hear other people commenting on here.
Also, and I'll post a new email about this soon, the events planning meeting during which I really hope to make concrete all of the material above/in Nat's post is scheduled to be held: This Thursday at 5.

Planning
Hi Natalie and all. I can MC if you want but only only on Tues--I teach Weds nights. We can talk tomorrow re refreshments. There are extra chairs in a closet in Donovan, so seating should be easy. Mark Richardson has the key to the cases on the 1st floor. I put a quickie flyer in there, but we'll want to get strategic about what goes in there. I can put info on the English Dept Web site etc. More soon.
i'll read something
Hello everyone,
I'll be glad to read a poem, or two, for Tuesday and Wednesday. I'd like to read the Jabberwocky on one night and a poem by Yusef Komunyakaa on the other night.
